Chapel Service

 Maundy Thursday  - Covenant Thursday                 April 18, 2019

Prelude                                             “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”                     Passion Chorale

O Sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; now scornfully surrounded with  thorns, thine only crown;

O Sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine.

Responsive Call to Worship    (Psalm 116:1, 4-6, 8,9, 12-14)

   I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.

            Then I called on the name of the LORD: "O LORD, I pray, deliver my soul!"

   Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; our God is merciful.

            The LORD preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me.

   For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;

            I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

   What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me?

  All: I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD, I will pay my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.

*Hymn #321                                                 “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

*Prayer of Adoration

Corporate Prayer of Confession with Individual Prayers of Confession

   Great and loving Father, as we remember Christ’s suffering in Gethsemane

   Our hearts are filled with shame that we foolishly, like the early disciples

   Have abandoned You for worldly comforts.

   Pardon us for not keeping watch with You in temptation’s hour.

   Instead of desiring Your will, we have been absorbed with our own.

   Forgive us for betraying You. Left to ourselves, we would run away in shame.

   Yet our Son gladly stoops again to serve us by washing us with the waters of His blood.

   Cleanse us thoroughly, we pray, in the blessed Name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Responsive Assurance of Divine Pardon  (2 Corinthians 5:21)

   For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
