Third Sunday of Easter                   April 18, 2021

*Responsive Call to Worship    (Psalm 33:8,9,10,11)

   Let all the earth fear the LORD;

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him!

  For He spoke, and it came to be;

He commanded, and it stood firm.

  The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;

He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

The counsel of the LORD stands forever,

The plans of His heart to all generations.

*Hymn #575                    “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms”

   Which is the fifth commandment?

Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land

which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

What is required in the fifth commandment?

...The preserving the honor, and performing the duties, belonging to everyone

in their several places and relations, as superiors, inferiors, or equals.

What is forbidden in the fifth commandment?

...The neglecting of, or doing anything against, the honor and duty

which belongeth to everyone in their several places and relations.

What is the reason annexed to the fifth commandment?

...a promise of long life and prosperity

(as far as it shall serve for God's glory and their own good)

to all such as keep this commandment.

Affirmation of Holy Scripture (Psalm 33:6,4)

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,

And by the breath of his mouth all their host.

For the word of the LORD is upright,

And all His work is done in faithfulness.

*Hymn                  “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”                                                 C. Wesley, Twit

1. Love divine, all loves excelling Joy of heaven, to earth come down

Fix in us thy humble dwelling  All Thy faithful mercies crown

Jesus, Thou art all compassion  Pure, unbounded love Thou art

Visit us with thy salvation  Enter every trembling, every trembling heart

2. Breathe, oh, breathe Thy loving Spirit  Into every troubled breast

Let us all in Thee inherit  Let us find the promised rest

Take away the love of sinning  Alpha and Omega be

End of faith, as its beginning  Set our hearts at liberty, at liberty

3. Come, Almighty, to deliver  Let us all Thy life receive

Suddenly return, and never  Nevermore Thy temples leave

Thee we would be always blessing  Serve Thee as Thy hosts above

Pray and praise Thee without ceasing  Glory in Thy perfect, in Thy perfect love

4. Finish, then, Thy new creation  Pure and spotless let us be

Let us see Thy great salvation  Perfectly restored in Thee

Changed from glory into glory  Til in heaven we take our place

Til we cast our crowns before Thee  Lost in wonder, love, in wonder, love and praise

Offertory & Prayer of Thanksgiving

Sermon                                 “We Don’t Understand God’s Love”                                         Pastor John W. Uhl

*Hymn #352                             “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”

Confessing Our Need of Christ Together and Individually

Holy God and Father of all who trust in You, we are Your redeemed people,

Yet many times we refuse to live in the freedom that is ours in You.

   We are Your beloved people,

Yet we spurn You by our desires for other loves.

   You call us to obedience,

But often we are passively indifferent or stubbornly disobedient

Therefore, we repent and ask Your forgiveness

For the travesty of our ongoing rebellion against You.

Cleanse us with the the Blood of Your Son, which was shed for us.

Show us how to build our lives on the only sure foundation,

   Jesus Christ, our faithful Savior.

Assurance of the Lord’s Pardon (Psalm 33:18-22)

Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love,

That He may deliver their soul from death. Our soul waits for the LORD.

He is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His Holy Name.

Let Your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in You.
