“Imitators of God” * Ephesians 5:1,2

Pastor John W. Uhl * August 15, 2021

Ephesians 5:1,2 - Walk in Love

[1] Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

[2] And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

INTRO:

Matthew 5:48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

  1.     We Imitate God because We are His Beloved Children (Eph 5:1).

Ephesians 1:4-5 …even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love [5] he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,

Ephesians 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

Romans 5:5 …and hope does not put us to shame, because Gods love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

2.       We Imitate God by Walking in Love (Eph 5:2).

Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

Jn 13:35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Matthew 5:43-47 - Love Your Enemies

[43] You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.[44] But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, [45] so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. [46] For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? [47] And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

3.       When We Imitate God, It is an Act of Worship (Eph 5:1,2).

Leviticus 1:9 And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar, as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

Eph 4:19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
