“Holiness for The Lord” * Ephesians 4:30

Pastor John W. Uhl * August 01, 2021

Ephesians 4:20-30

[20] But that is not the way you learned Christ!—

[21] assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, [22] to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

[23] and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

[24] and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

[25] Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

[26] Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

[27] and give no opportunity to the devil.

[28] Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

[29] Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

[30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

INTRO:

  1.     Doing Good is Never About Being Good (Eph 4:30).

Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, [14] who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

1 Corin. 3:16 Do you not know that you are Gods temple and that Gods Spirit dwells in you?

1 Corin. 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

2.       The Power to Be Good does Not Come From Our Own Strength.

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, [20] idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, [21] envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Phil. 2:13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Romans 8:13-14 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
