“The Atonement of Jesus Christ” * Ephesians 5:2

Pastor John W. Uhl * August 22, 2021

Ephesians 5:2

[2] And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

  1.     Jesus ‘gave himself up’ for Us (Eph 5:2).

Romans 3:22-23 For there is no distinction: [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

John 10:18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

Acts 2:23-24…this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. [24] God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

2.       Jesus was Offered and Sacrificed for Us (Eph 5:2).

Hebrews 10:3-4 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. [4] For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Hebrews 10:8-10 When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), [9] then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. [10] And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

John 19:28-30 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), I thirst.” [29] A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. [30] When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

3.       Jesus Died because He Loves Us (Eph 5:2).

Rom. 5:8…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
