In the history of redemption, Pentecost occurred 10 days after the ascension of Christ (observed May 13, 2021) and 50 days after His resurrection. It was the fulfillment of the great promise Jesus made to His disciples that He would send “another counselor” (John 14:16) .

John Stott says, “Without the Holy Spirit, Christian discipleship would be inconceivable, even impossible. There can be no life without the Life-giver, no understanding without the Spirit of Truth, no fellowship without the unity of the Spirit, no Christ-likeness of character apart from His fruit, and no effective witness without His power. As a body without breath is a corpse, so the church without the Spirit is dead.”

Therefore, on this Pentecost Sunday, may we celebrate and express our gratitude to Christ for His faithfulness in keeping His promise. Let us also celebrate the Spirit’s work in renewing all of creation and profess our absolute dependence on Him for our lives in the faith and our power for the mission to reach the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

 Pentecost Sunday                   May 23, 2021

*Responsive Call to Worship    (Isaiah 66:19; Ps 86:9; Isa 64:1,2)

I will send survivors to the nations, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard My Fame or seen My glory.

And they shall declare My glory among the nations.

All the earth worships You and sings praises to You; they sing praises to Your Name.

All the nations You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,

            and shall glorify Your Name.

Nations will fear the Name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear Your glory.

O that You would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at Your presence

To make Your Name known to Your adversaries,

and that the nations might tremble at Your presence!

*Hymn #43                      “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”

Affirmation of Holy Scripture (Psalm 119:166)

*Hymn                                     “My Lord, I Did Not Choose You”                                  Condor, Smith

Chorus: My Lord I did not choose You For that could never be

My heart would still refuse You Had You not chosen me

You took the sin that stained me Cleansed me, made me new

Of old, You have ordained me That I should live in You

Unless Your grace had called me And taught my opening mind

The world would have enthralled me To heavenly glories blind

My heart knows none above You For Your rich grace I thirst

I know that if I love You You must have loved me first

Corporate & Individual Confession of Sins

God our Father, who sent the promised Holy Spirit

to fill disciples with willing faith,

we confess that we resist the will of Your Spirit among us,

   are slow to serve You,

and reluctant to spread the good news of Your love.

When Your Spirit speaks, we turn deaf ears,

for we fear what You might call us to do.

When the fire of Your Spirit touches us, we quench the flame,

afraid of the new life it might bring.

Have mercy on us, O God.

Transform our timid lives by the power of Your Spirit.

Inflame us with a desire to do Your will and be Your faithful people

for the sake of Your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Assurance of the Lord’s Pardon (Romans 8:1,11)

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,

he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead

will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
